After a 12-year battle with cancer, Martha Bezemek, 87, of El Paso, Texas, peacefully passed away September 19, 2025 surrounded by her loved ones. She is now pain free and with her Lord and Savior.
Martha met her husband Lud in 1959 at Ft Bliss, Texas through work (Martha worked at the housing office and assigned Lud his Bachelor Officer Quarters). They quickly became friends and would often go to lunch at Luby's Cafeteria on Montana St. After Lud was assigned to Germany, they continued their friendship through letters and a romance grew. They married in October 1964. There began a lifetime of traveling throughout the US and abroad as a military and later a civilian family. Along the way they had three children, two daughters-in-law, one son-in-law, three grandchildren, six dogs, two tarantulas, one turtle, three feral cats, and way too many fish. They also lived in two countries, four states, endured two yearlong separations while Lud was in Vietnam, and a had couple of really bad cases of chiggers from walking in the pasture on the family farm in Kansas. Martha enjoyed every adventure and felt blessed with the life that she was given. Even with cancer she never complained and never faltered in her faith. She was a Housing Director, Real Estate Agent, Sunday School teacher, Children's Choir director, Hoby volunteer, Salvation Army volunteer, Optimist International Volunteer, YMCA volunteer, PTA President and Vice President, soccer mom, band mom, debate mom, tennis widow, and did a lot of DIY and general maintenance around the house that usually ended with calling in a professional. Martha had many accomplishments but her pride and joy was her strong marriage and loving family that she nurtured and grew through her strong faith in God.
Martha is survived by her steadfast, loving, and loyal husband Lud, her three adoring children Michael (Karen) Bezemek, Gary (Elizabeth) Bezemek, Sandy (Scott) Gerber and three amazing grandchildren Clara Bezemek, Christopher Bezemek, and Sarah Bezemek. She is also survived by her loving Sisters-in-law who she admired greatly because of their many talents and heartfelt love, Roz Jarrett (Eagan, Minnesota) , Mary Clark (Salina, Kansas), Ella Erskin (Ralegh, North Carolina), sister Stella Salveson (Sacramento, California) as well as many nieces and nephews and her loving cousins Tony and Margrate. Martha also had many wonderful friends with whom she loved like family. Ernestine, her rock and confidante. St Paul's Woman and her St Paul's family, with whom she adored and drew strength from her time in fellowship and prayer. Childhood friends and classmates that she shared fond memories. Her friends through real estate who she enjoyed working with. Finally, her friends and neighbors from her little cul-de-sac, who she could always count on. Martha leaves behind a legacy of deep-rooted faith, fellowship, and love. She was kind, gentle, giving, and beautiful in every way, she will be missed.
The family would like to thank Dr’s Sanchez and Gupta of Texas Oncology for their outstanding care and treatment of our mother over the years. We would also like to thank Dr. and Mrs. Min who looked after her heart. Martha’s home health care team from Enhabit who we could not imagine this cancer journey without. And special thanks to Martha’s care givers who were there with us until the end.
A graveside service will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date to be announced.
In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to Martha's cousin's Tony and Margrate who are missionaries with Christians in Action
