Mayme Lee Avent

Mayme Lee Breazell Avent was born February 14, 1927, to Benjamin and Mabel Breazell, in New Mexico. She had 4 brothers and 4 sisters (all deceased). Sister Avent moved to El Paso in 1941. Mayme married Reginald Avent in 1951. Mayme and Reginald were married for 53 years. Mr. Avent passed away in 2004. 

Sister Avent is a proud graduate of Douglas High School's Class of 1946. She attended Santa Ana California College of Medical Technicians and received certification as a Certified Surgical Technician in 1967. She also had certification in Respiratory Therapy. Sister Avent was also a seamstress, floral designer, and hat designer. 

Sister Avent worked for Alaska Native Medical Center assisting underprivileged children of Alaska (Eskimos). She worked in El Paso at Hotel Dieu Hospital as a surgical nurse. She worked in California as a Certified Respiratory Therapist. Sister Avent retired in 1989 and began volunteer work with the Rio Grande Council of Governments on Aging as Ombudsman, and other capacities. She has received recognition and awards for her volunteer service in Mount Zion and the community. 

Sister Avent joined Mount Zion Baptist Church (MZBC) in 1943 (16 years old) under the pastorate of J. L. Maxwell. She worked with the Outreach Program calling seniors who lived alone to assure that they were well and to determine if there were any needs that MZBC could assist with. She prepared and cared for fresh flowers at the church and sent flowers on behalf of the church to bereaved persons in and out of town. Sister Avent served on the Choir, Pastor's Aide, Hospitality, Nurses' Guild, and contributed to the Public Relations Ministry's newsletter, MZBC Informer. She wrote a "Hospitality" poem and prayer for Hospitality's Fifth Annual Day (1995). At MZBC, she also did church decorations for 17 years, and used her sewing talents to make pastoral robes, uniforms for Hospitality and the Ushers, and garments for many others. Awards from MZBC include The Torchbearer Award (2009) and Volunteer Appreciation Award (2013) from the late Rev. James L. Williams. In 2017, she received "Most Senior Member" when she turned 90 years old from Rev. Atiie C. Maxwell. 

Sister Mayme received a Certificate of Recognition from Special Olympics (2003), yearly awards from Foster Grandparents Program and the School Board (Americas High School). Sister Mayme enjoyed her work with special needs children and the elderly. She was honored by the Mayor's Advisory Board for Service to the Community, inducted in the El Paso's Hall of Fame for Community Service. She has been honored by Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and Eta Pi Omega Chapter (Best Dressed Women of the Southwest). Sister Mayme was a member of the Phyllis Wheatley Club from 1997 to 2014. In 2015, she made 104 garments for little boys and girls for donation to the enlisted families at Fort Bliss. 

Sister Mayme's favorite bible verse is: Psalms 37:4 NKN "Delight yourself also in the Lord, And He shall give the desires of your heart." Sister Mayme's Advice: Believe in God, in yourself, always be kind to others, and you will succeed in all your endeavors." 

Interment will be held at 10:00 am on Friday August 14, 2026 at Fort Bliss National Cemetery, 5200 Fred Wilson Ave.
