Modesto Arturo Duran (Tury) passed peacefully from this life into eternal rest on April 9, 2026, at the age of 91. He was a wonderful husband, brother, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, and he will be deeply missed. Though we are grieving, we are also comforted knowing that he is now in the arms of God’s loving embrace. His last spoken words were “I love you” to our mom. What a beautiful blessing. His faith, love, and steady presence shaped our lives in countless ways.
Arturo was preceded in death by his father, Modesto Jacquez Duran; his mother, Consuelo Gonzales Duran; and two brothers, Felipe Duran and Daniel Duran.
Arturo was a professional civil engineer who worked for the Texas Department of Highways and Public Transportation for 31 years, his entire career. Arturo designed many of the bridges and highways we drive over in El Paso. He enjoyed mentoring and teaching younger engineers, often at Texas A&M. He was an exceptional golfer, frequently winning on the “championship flight” in tournaments. He was such a wiz at crossword puzzles and enjoyed completing them regularly. In his free time, he tinkered with gadgets and invented a few very useful items, like his “automatic dog feeder”. We really wanted him to patent that! He had a great sense of humor that we all enjoyed.
He is survived by his wife, Maria Elena Borrego Duran, his daughters, Linda Harris (Stephen), Diana Kirk, Rosie Gonzalez (Steven), and his son, Art Duran (Kristi). He is also survived by 13 grandchildren: Charlene Lane (Kade), Alexander Bankerd, Emily Bankerd, Steven Gonzalez Jr., Saberin Gonzalez, Aaron Gill (Jazmine), Charles Kirk, Rachel Janas (Joe), David Duran, Joseph Duran (Jessy), Jennifer Duran, Daniel Duran, and Julia Duran. He is also survived by 6 great-grandchildren: Sofia Lane, Joshua Lane, Patrick Janas, Gregory Janas, Louise Janas, and newborn Joan Janas, as well as many extended family members and friends who will cherish and honor his memory.
We will miss him deeply, but we hold on to God’s promise that this is not goodbye forever.
“Well done, good and faithful servant.” – Matthew 25:23
Thank you for surrounding our family with love and prayer during this time.
