Myrtle Lenore Lewis-Fykes

January 13, 1936 — September 1, 2025

El Paso

Myrtle Lenore Lewis-Fykes transitioned peacefully to her heavenly home on September 1, 2025, at the age of 89. Born in East Chicago, Indiana, to Estelle Bell Lewis and Joseph Lewis, Myrtle’s life was a testament to the power of education, service, and unwavering grace. She accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior at a young age and was a proud member of St. Mark A.M.E. Zion Church in East Chicago before settling in El Paso Texas.

A proud graduate of East Chicago Washington High School (Class of 1954), Myrtle pursued her passion of learning at Ball State Teachers College (now Ball State University), earning her Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education in 1958. She later obtained a Master’s degree in Education Administration and continued her academic journey with additional graduate degrees from Governors State University—embodying the spirit of a life long learner.

Myrtle’s dedication to education spanned more than 65 years, touching countless lives as a classroom teacher, counselor, and administrator, culminating in her service with the El Paso Independent School District. Her ability to transform even the most challenging students into thriving individuals was nothing short of remarkable. Even after retirement, she continued to mentor educators, instructional coaches and administrators.

Her journey with Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. began in 1954 with an invitation to join the Ivy Leaf Club. In May 1957, she was initiated into the Kappa Chapter at Butler University. Myrtle proudly celebrated her milestones as a Golden Soror in 2007 and a Pearl Soror in 2022, exemplifying sisterhood, scholarship, and service throughout her life.

Small in stature but mighty in presence, Myrtle was known for her commanding grace, sharp intellect, and warm heart. She loved books, cooking, traveling, spending time with family, and doting on her beloved dachshund companions Fella, Chip, and Dale. Her commitment to civic duty was evident in her regular volunteer work at polling stations and her active involvement in her church community.

Myrtle is survived by her cherished sister Louise Perry of DeSoto Texas; her adored fur babies; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, godchildren and dear friends. Her legacy lives on in the countless lives she touched, the students she inspired, and the educators she mentored.

Her life was a beautiful symphony of purpose, passion, and perseverance. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
