Omar H. Chavez passed away at his home in El Paso, Texas on August 2, 2011 at the age of 76. Omar will be greatly missed by his wife Beatriz Chavez, his children, Matthias Schneck, Elizabeth Duncan, Stella Quiñones, Christina Chavez-Nuñez, Omar A. Chavez and Leah Leon, his 11 grandchildren (Pamela, Kathy, Gabriela, Manuel, Nicolas, Philipp, Laura, Ariana, Rebecca, Joey and Jackson) and his sister Magda Chavez. Omar was born to Arturo and Elisa Chavez in Santa Barbara, Chihuahua in 1934. He served in the U.S. Army as a paratrooper in the 101st Airborne Division and worked at The Popular Department Store for more than 35 years. Omar was a sports enthusiast and especially enjoyed visits from his grandchildren and family. Visitation will take place at Sunset Funeral Home West on Sunday, August 7 from 5–9pm with a Rosary at 7pm. The funeral mass will be held at 9:30am at St. Matthew Catholic Church, 400 W. Sunset, officiated by Monsignor David G. Fierro. Interment will immediately follow at Ft. Bliss National Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Martin Stevens, Omar A. Chavez, Manuel Quiñones, John Duncan, Joseph Leon, Carlos Velazquez, Manuel Quiñones Jr. and Nicolas Duncan. The family would like to express their gratitude to the nurses and staff from Las Palmas, White Acres and Odyssey Hospice. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Centro Santa Catalina, 1207 Alabama St., 79930 and the St. Matthew Catholic Church Building Fund. Services entrusted to Sunset Funeral Home-West.
