PEDRO (PETE) CHAVEZ, 89 Pedro “Pete” Chavez, 89, of El Paso, Texas, passed away, Tuesday, June 19, 2018. A visitation service will be held from 5:00-9:00 pm, Sunday, June 24, at Sunset Funeral Home Northeast, 4631 Hondo Pass. The vigil/rosary will take place at 7:00pm, also at Sunset Funeral Home. The funeral mass for Mr. Chavez will be at 11:30am on Monday, June 25 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 1315 Travis Street. Burial will follow at Ft. Bliss National Cemetery, 5200 Fred Wilson Boulevard. Pete was born on November 16, 1928 in Torreon, Coahuila, Mexico to Jose and Jesusita Chavez. He graduated from Bowie High School in El Paso in 1946 and later married Alicia Meraz. The two were married for 67 years before her passing in 2016. Pete served his country as a member of the United States Air Force, trained in supply and data processing. He was stationed in Okinawa, Puerto Rico and various other Air Force bases, including Biggs Field, before retiring from active duty in 1969. Pete moved his family back to El Paso and was employed briefly by Carter Petroleum before becoming a foreman for the El Paso Water Utilities. He worked there for nearly three decades before retiring in 1995. During his retirement, Pete enjoyed working around the house and spending time with his children and grandchildren. Pete is survived by his two sons, Robert Chavez of Albuquerque, NM and Rick Chavez and his wife Ann of Hayward, CA; his daughter Suzy Crutchfield of Las Cruces, NM; four grandchildren, Ricky Chavez of San Jose, CA, Danny Chavez of Anaheim CA, Ryan Romero and Matthew Crutchfield of Las Cruces, NM; his brothers, Robert Chavez and his wife Felicia, Balta Chavez and his wife Alicia, Jose Chavez, and Armando Chavez and his wife Mercedes of El Paso; sisters Maria Elena Chavez and Josefina Montes of El Paso, and Alicia Alba and her husband Art of Las Cruces, NM. Pete was preceded in death by his wife, Alicia, on May 1, 2016.
