Phillip T. Laign

August 29, 1938 — July 8, 2016

Phillip Thomas Laign, age 77, completed his journey of faith and entered the promised rest as the sun was setting on Friday, July 8, 2016. Born in Grafton, West Virginia on August 29, 1938, he graduated from Gassaway High School and enlisted in the United States Army. In 1960, he married the love of his life, Heidemarie, while stationed in Pirmasens, Germany. Their fifty-five year journey of marriage would take them through three continents and several states. After retiring from the Army, Phillip would continue to serve the Fort Bliss community as a travel clerk for several more years. A man of faith, he enjoyed reading the Bible and believed the best way to show love for God and fellow man was to obey the commandments. In addition to spending time with family and friends, often regaling in stories of his military service or his youthful exploits in Gassaway, Mr. Laign enjoyed Chilean cabernet sauvignon, nature photography, tales of the old west, and classic television. He was preceded in death by his parents Paul and Gladys Laign, sister Barbara Ashenfelter, and brother Richard Laign. He is survived by his sister Susie Ross, brother David Laign, and his wife Heidemarie, children Peggy Ann Sparkman and son Phillip Thomas Laign, Jr., four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. The family extends thanks to all who extended prayers on behalf of Phillip during his recent surgery and is grateful to the staff of Del Sol Medical Center who provided care and comfort to Phillip, and courtesy to the family he loved so much.
