Powell “Stumpy” Winslow Caldwell, 83, passed away on Saturday, January 8th, 2022. Powell was born in Lincolnton, North Carolina on February 15th, 1938. At 17, he proudly joined the United States Army. During his twenty-year career in the Army, he fought in both the Vietnam war and the Korean War. While in the Army, he was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry, Aircraft Crewman Badge, and Driver Badge. Powell married the love of his life, Barbara Anne Beaty, January 4th, 1972. Together they moved to El Paso, Texas where Powell enjoyed his bowling league, car races, and flying model airplanes. He taught others how to fly model planes as a member of the flight club. Powell was preceded in death by his parents, Forest and Mabel Ruth Caldwell; his sister, Sandra C. Little; and his son, Ernest W. Welch. He is survived by his siblings: Jane C Setzer, Thrace C.Schronce, Celia Maddry, Forrest L. Caldwell, and J. Morris Caldwell. Powell also leaves behind his wife of 50 years, Anne B. Caldwell, and their children: Powell W. Caldwell, Charles O. Welch, Dolores C. Jordan, Robert E. Welch, Jeffery L. Welch, and Pamela A. Alvarez. Powell was the proud grandfather of 15 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren. Visitation and services will be held on Monday, January 24th, 2022 at Sunset Funeral Homes Northeast - 4631 Hondo Pass. Full military honors will follow at Fort Bliss National Cemetery.
