Raul Ricardo Chavez Sr. 79 passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 17, 2014. He was born on January 26, 1935 to Miguel and Julieta (Rodela) Chavez. He is also preceded in death by three brothers: Alfredo, Alfonso and James Chavez. He was a 1954 graduate of Bowie High School, served proudly in the U.S. Air Force and retired with 26 years of service from the El Paso Times. Raul loved listening to music, dancing, going to bull fights and visiting with the "Camaradas" de la Bowie.
Raul is survived by his five children and family members that include: Isabella (Chavez) Montes and her husband Armando Montes, Rebecca "Becky", Raul Jr., Alfredo "Freddie", and Adrian and his wife Alicia (Kaplan) Chavez. He also had two grandchildren whom he adored: Crystal (Montes) Nevarez and Jonah Chavez; his great grandchild, RJ Nevarez; his former wife and good friend Elvia (Mares) Chavez; and sister, Genoveva (Chavez) Abreo. Pallbearers to serve will be RJ Nevarez, Raul Nevarez, David Montes, Freddy Montes, Bobby Chavez, Adan Lopez and Jonah Chavez.
Visitation will be from 4:00-9:00 p.m. with a Vigil to begin at 7:00 p.m., Sunday, August 24, 2014 at Sunset Funeral Home-East, 750 N. Carolina Dr. Funeral Mass will be at 11:30 a.m., Monday, August 25, 2015 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Interment will follow at 1:00 p.m. at Fort Bliss National Cemetery.
