On Sunday, April 12, 2026, Richard Wayne Gerlach (Wayne), 85 years young, surrendered to his final battle and joined the column of comrades marching to their ultimate reward.
Wayne was born in Chester, Illinois, on June 12, 1940. He graduated from Chester High School and then left to proudly serve his country as a soldier in the US Army. In 1961, Wayne would marry Irene, the love of his life.
Upon retiring from a 27-year Army career, Wayne went on to work for Chrysler and American Yazaki, retiring in 2003.
He loved puttering with his model trains, playing accordion, woodworking, cooking, baking, and spending time with his wife and family.
Wayne leaves behind his loving wife of sixty-four years, Irene, his daughters, Ginny (Tim) Beaulieu and Christine Gerlach, and his cherished grandchildren, Ricky and Tina. He is also survived by his sister, Susan (Ken) Loudermilk.
In lieu of flowers, please donate to the El Paso Sergeants Major Association “2026 Scholarship Fund”. Wayne was a graduate of class 13, and the scholarship fund was near and dear to his heart. A Gathering of Remembrance will be held Tuesday, April 28, 2026, 11:00 am – 2:00 pm at Sunset Funeral Homes – East, 750 N. Carolina with a prayer service at 12:30 pm. A Fort Bliss Graveside Service with Military Honors is scheduled Wednesday, April 29, 2026, 10:00 am at Fort Bliss National Cemetery, 5200 Fred Wilson Ave.
