Robert Charles Hicks

August 23, 1926 — July 23, 2014

Robert Charles “Charlie” Hicks passed away on Wednesday, July 23, 2014 at the age of 87. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and brother who will be greatly missed. He was preceded in death by his brothers Barney Hicks and A.D. Hicks, and sisters Louise Murphy and Pauline Hicks. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Kathryn Hicks, sons Robert C. Hicks, Jr., and wife Kelly, Larry W. Hicks and wife Georgia, seven grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and his sisters Betty Sue Eaton and Virginia Jackson. Charlie Hicks was born on August 23, 1926 in Rusk, Texas to Travis Barrett Hicks and Clara Parker Hicks. He was raised on farms in central and west Texas with his two brothers and four sisters. Though he quit school after ninth grade, he was a voracious reader and proponent for education his entire life. He hired on with Standard Oil of Texas in 1943 to work in company-owned service stations. He joined the US Navy in 1944 and served in the South Pacific during World War II. After the war, he re-joined Standard Oil and helped build the pipelines between the Permian Basin and El Paso and between El Paso and Albuquerque. While working at the pipeline booster station at Salt Flat, Texas, he met and married the love of his life, Kathryn Tigert in 1948. Kat and Charlie’s two sons, Rob and Larry, were born while they lived in Salt Flat. The family moved to El Paso in 1955 where Charlie worked for the Chevron Pipeline until 1984. Charlie enjoyed woodworking, traveling, and helping others. He was a long-time member of the Scottish Rite Masons, and served seven times as the Master of his Blue Lodge. He also enjoyed serving his church, Scottsdale Baptist Church, where he was a member for over 50 years. Most of all, Charlie loved spending time and telling stories with all of his friends and family. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 29, 2014, from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Sunset Funeral Home-West.
