Roderick (Rod) John Fraser, Jr, 91, passed away on Saturday, February 7th. Born in Texarkana, Texas on July 2nd, 1923 to Carrie Mae Crumpton Fraser and Roderick J. Fraser, the family moved to El Paso when Rod was young, where he attended Dudley Elementary School. In 1941, Rod graduated from El Paso High School and later attended the Texas School of Mines (now UTEP) for one year. He joined the Army and was active in the European theater during World War II.
He attended and received his degree from the University of Texas at Austin where he was Vice President of Phi Kappa Alpha fraternity and became a lifetime member of American Institute of Electrical Engineers. After graduation, Rod married Loelleta Ruth Carpenter in 1948 and worked for the Texas Electric Company in Ft. Worth where three of his daughters were born. In 1956, Rod moved back to El Paso with his young family and joined the El Paso Natural Gas Company where he worked until he retired in 1983. In 1957, his youngest daughter was born.
Throughout his life in El Paso, Rod was an avid golfer as a member of El Paso Country Club and an active member and deacon of First Presbyterian Church of El Paso. Rod was a dedicated and involved University of Texas alumnus, and attended many Longhorn games. He was immensely proud of his Scottish heritage and was well known for his warmth and sense of humor. He was deeply loved and will be missed by many.
He is survived by his wife Mary Carolyn and three daughters, Claire Perkins, Laurie Kunert (Jerry) and Judy Wesen (Elliot) and six grandchildren Candace Kinser, Evan Kunert (Dana), Sarah Wesen and Rachel Wesen, Heather Childers (Bill) and Thomas Brand and two great-grandchildren, Aidan Kunert and Layla Childers. He is also survived by eight step-children, Diane DeGroat, Stephen DeGroat, Donna DeGroat, Barbara Clawson, William B. Hooten, Preston Rust Hooten, Jane Masters and Carlie Pine. Rod was preceded in death by his daughter Melissa Brand and his wife of 35 years, Mary Austin Perrenot.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 11th, 2015 from 8:00am to 8:30am at Sunset Funeral Home-West. Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 am on Wednesday, February 11th, 2015 at First Presbyterian Church, 1340 Murchison. Commital Service will be held privately.
