LTC Roger L. Moore Ret. USAF Reserve
Survived by his devoted wife of 40 years, Ronnie Faye Moore and children Michelle Ferrado (Joe), Paul Moore, Adrianne Guarino (Carmine), Debbi Moore (Vince), Sandi Ramirez, Bobbi Moore, 18 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his Mother-in-Law, Pauline Ernst, Sisters-in-Law Janie McNally and Beverly Ernst of Parma. Preceded in death by his parents Naomi and Walter Moore, daughter Melanie Moore, and granddaughter Sidney Drew Chavez. Mr. Moore was a member of the first High School Civilian Pilot Training Course during which time he soloed his first flight at the age of 17. He served proudly in the United States Navy (1942-1945). During his service in the Navy he attended Aerology School, cross trained as an Aviation Pilot 2nd Class, qualified for Lighter Than Air duty, flew LTA and Hurricane Weather Flights, participated in the Micro-Seismograph Research for Cal-Tech Navy Joint Project and was a shallow water diver (predecessor to the Navy Seals). He was a proud 1948 graduate of the University of Nebraska where he earned three letters as a Diving Champion securing his membership in the “N” Club. He also served proudly in the United States Air Force (1950-1984). He was a Squadron Commander during his active reserve duty; retiring after 34 years of active and reserve military duty as a Lieutenant Colonel. He earned a graduate degree in Meteorology from the University of Chicago. He was a Professional Member of the American Meteorological Society and Meteorologist in Charge at Harding Field, Louisiana. Roger came to El Paso as a Meteorologist for the El Paso Weather Bureau where he remained until he entered the University of Texas at Austin to study law. He received his Doctor of Jurisprudence Degree in 1960 from the University of Texas at Austin. He was a 6th Grade Teacher at Ascarate Elementary School. He maintained a solo law practice in El Paso for 50 years and was the County Attorney for Hudspeth County from 1975 to 1990. He served on the State of Texas Bar Disciplinary Committee for 12 years. He was an Eagle Scout, Member of Sacred Circle of the Golden Sun, Order of the Arrow, Boy Scout District Commissioner of Wapaha District (2 years) Yucca Council Award of Merit, and recipient of the Silver Beaver Award. He was a founding member of the Tigua VFW Club and Lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a 32nd Degree Mason of the John Bean Lodge, Member of the Scottish Rite. He was an El Maida Shrine Temple Member; Colonel of the Shrine Lizzie Patrol in 1995. He was a 4-year member of the Black Range Artists Association and a 4-year member of the El Paso Artists Association. He was a Lifetime Member of the Del Norte Lions Club. He received many awards during his tenure as a Lion, including Lion of the Year, recipient of the “L” award for forming the Fort Hancock Lions Club, Membership Key Member, Senior Key Member, Commendation Award from International President Ebb Grindstaff, and Texas Lions Camp for Crippled Children Century Club Key Holder. He served as President of the Del Norte Lions Club 3 times, Publicity Chairman for District 2T3 and District Governor 1973-1974. He formed 16 Leo Clubs while District Governor. He helped to develop the First Multiple District 2 Long Range Planning Committee. He served on the Endowment Committee for the Texas Lions Camp for Crippled Children in Kerrville for 5 years and was one of the Founders of the Julian Hyer Youth Camp. He also served as the Multiple District 2 Membership Chairman. In addition to all of the community service Mr. Moore participated in, he was also an avid golfer, camper, artist, poet, history buff, animal lover, and awesome Dad. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Texas Lions Camp for Crippled Children in Kerrville, Texas or the Shriner’s Burn Hospital in Galveston, Texas.
A Memorial Service will be held at 6:00pm on Wednesday, April 20, 2016 at Sunset Funeral Home-West. Inurnment will take place at 11:00am on Thursday, April 21, 2016 at Fort Bliss National Cemetery, with full military honors. Services entrusted to Sunset Funeral Home-West, 480 N.
