Shirley Carr Washington was a living legend. Born October 18, 1947, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, she was the second of three daughters to District Elder Clayton and Mother Carmi Pettiford Carr. In 1956, the family moved to El Paso, Texas, where her father founded Bethlehem Temple, Inc. Shirley began elementary school that same year and later graduated from Bel Air High School, Class of 1966.
On April 2, 1966, just weeks before graduation, she married the love of her life, Pastor Daniel W. Washington. Together, they raised five children: Sheri Evette Washington Dobbins (Scott), Daniel W. Washington Jr. (Rose), Debra Yvonne Kerney (Perry), Michael Kristan Washington (Miriam), and CarmaLisa Washington. She adored her 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren, always saying each one was her favorite.
Shirley was the fourth generation of her family to answer the call to ministry. Alongside her husband, she faithfully served Bethlehem Temple in nearly every capacity—evangelist, music minister, Sunday School teacher, bookkeeper, women’s ministry leader, and Co-Pastor. Her wisdom, love, and faith shaped generations.
She had two beloved sisters, Pauline Eddings and Adele Johnson. Like Shirley, both married preachers and served faithfully in ministry.
A renaissance woman, Shirley was a gifted singer, pianist, cook, poet, artist, and encourager. She made everyone feel like family.
On April 16, 2025, after writing her final Easter message and preparing a meal, she peacefully transitioned to glory. Her life was a race well run—full of faith, love, and purpose.
