Sylvia Gutierrez, age 66, entered eternal rest on Sunday, April 5, 2026. She was a wonderful daughter, sister, mother, and friend who will be deeply missed. Sylvia was preceded in death by her maternal grandmother, María de los Angeles Hernandez; her paternal grandparents, Mariano and Jovita Gutierrez; and her father, Alberto Jose Gutierrez.
Sylvia spent more than 34 years as an exceptional teacher, encouraging and motivating both students and peers with her kindness, commitment, and caring nature. Over the years, she taught various subjects and was especially committed to helping young students facing challenges such as dyslexia, ADHD, and autism. She devoted much of her personal time to the Destination Imagination Program, leaving a lasting impression—many former students stayed in touch long after graduating. Her warmth, creativity, and devotion to others touched countless lives.
Sylvia’s love for painting and crafts showcased her creativity throughout the year and for all occasions, especially Christmas. Her creations will be cherished by those fortunate enough to receive them, and her legacy is one of kindness, creativity, and a positive influence on countless lives.
We are deeply grateful to the many people who surrounded her with care, kindness, and love. Our heartfelt thanks go to Dr. Weathers; the doctors, nurses, and staff at MD Anderson; the New Mission therapists and nurses; Dr. Mahmoud; as well as Nurse Josie Murphy and the Envision Hospice Team, who provided comfort and dignity every step of the way. We are also incredibly thankful to those who contributed through the GoFundMe, allowing us the precious gift of more time together. To our family and friends—your visits, messages, and presence brought her great joy and meant more than words can express. She knew she was deeply loved.
She is survived by her mother, Sylvia Portillo; her sons, Eric David Meza, Adam Alexander Meza, and Gabriel Andres Meza; and her siblings: Albert Gutierrez (Sharon Gutierrez), Luis Gutierrez (Nora Pérez), Aída Gándara (Edgar Gándara), and Diana Apodaca (Robert Apodaca). She is also survived by her nieces and nephews: Jenny Donohue (Ryan Donohue), Noah Gutierrez, Marisa Gándara, Isaac Gándara (Diana Moreno), Edgar Gándara, Ayla Apodaca, and Aydan Apodaca, as well as many extended family members and friends who will cherish and honor her memory.
