Winfrey Rogers Hearst passed away peacefully on March 5, 2024, in El Paso, Texas. She was a kind, gentle, and compassionate person who loved her family, friends, and Corgis dearly. Winfrey was born on February 27, 1943 in El Paso to Estelle Graves and John Rogers. She attended El Paso High and earned a B.S. in Education, followed by a B.A. in Art, from the University of Texas at El Paso. With both brains and beauty, she won the title of Cotton Queen in 1962 and was a top 10 finalist in the national Maid of Cotton contest the same year. In 1964, she married her college sweetheart, Robert Hearst. They lived in El Paso and Idaho before calling Helena, Montana home for 18 years. The family returned to El Paso in 1988. While living in Helena, Winfrey continued to nurture her true passion, visual art, through classes and workshops.
A talented printmaker and painter, Winfrey’s work was exhibited at the Chamizal National Monument, El Museo Cultural de Santa Fe, the Consulado General de Mexico, Las Cruces Museum of Art, the International Museum of Art in El Paso, as well as many regional galleries. She served as a docent at the El Paso Museum of Art and was an active member of Las Artistas, Border Artists, and Plein Air Painters. Winfrey and Robert were married for 39 years until his passing in 2003. In 2009, Winfrey married John Greenfield. Together they enjoyed traveling and the symphony. Winfrey is survived by her husband, John; her daughter, Alison Hearst, and son-in-law, Kris Pierce; cousins Susan and Tom Swatek; stepson Johnny Greenfield and family; stepdaughter Caroline Greenfield and family; sister-in-law Donna Robinson; sister- and brother-in-law Margaret and Bill Cassells; and nephews Clay Cassells, Max Hearst, and their families.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, March 16, 2024 at Western Hills United Methodist Church, 524 Thunderbird Drive, El Paso, 79912. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the El Paso Museum of Art and the Alzheimer’s Association.
