Winston Alfred Johnson

WINSTON ALFRED JOHNSON, SR. Winston A. Johnson, Sr. 93, of El Paso, TX, passed away on August 14, 2016, after a brief illness. Winston was born on August 28th, 1922, in Childress, TX, to parents Joseph and Beatrice Johnson. In Las Cruces, he attended high school and New Mexico State University where he met his wife of 72 years, Mary Tippin Johnson (deceased). After marrying, Winston joined the Army Air Corps and became a C47 pilot during WWII pulling troop-carrying gliders, carrying wounded from the front lines to France, and supplies back. He fought in Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe. After WWII he worked as a Sales Engineer and then became a partner in Herlin Engineering which later became Herlin Equipment Company. Winston was a devoted husband, a dedicated father to his three sons and a generous Christian, donating countless hours and tithing to St. Mark’s United Methodist Church for over 70 years. He was one of the Greatest Generation, known for its sense of integrity, faith, hope, patriotism, family and commitment. Winston, Sr. is survived by two sons, Winston, Jr. (wife Vivian) of Las Cruces, Kenneth (wife Kathy) of El Paso, and by 7 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Mary, one son, Robert (wife Resa) of Canutillo and his brother, Don Johnson, of Southern California. A private service is to be held on Aug. 24. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Animal Rescue League of El Paso, 7256 La Junta; El Paso, Texas 79835; www.arlep.org, or St. Mark’s United Methodist Church – Congregational Care; 5005 Love Road; El Paso, Texas 79922 or the charity of your choice. The family would like to thank Dr. Dwayne Aboud for his excellent care of both Winston and Mary Johnson, and Comfort Keepers for their caring assistance.
