Woodrow Wilson Hammond, Jr
June 2, 1947 - March 29, 2026
In loving memory of Woody Hammond
Woody Hammond loved his family and loved the Lord. He passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 29, 2026.
Woody was a “military brat” born in Montgomery, Alabama. His father was a career military in the US Army (WW2 and Korea) and his mother, Juanita Wallace, homemaker and dedicated Sunday School teacher. The family landed in El Paso, TX during Woody’s sophomore year of high school. He graduated from Burgess High School as a National Merit Scholar finalist. Woody was the oldest of three siblings, sister Beth and brother Sam, and he cherished their relationship. The three of them grew to love traveling in their adulthood, traveling all over the country and globe. Woody always planned road trips so his children could experience the beauty of the country as well.
Upon graduating high school, he earned his higher education degrees from UT Austin. Woody was a dedicated architect by profession, and servant of the Lord by heart. He was a well-respected architect whose more than 40-year career left a lasting imprint on El Paso and beyond. A specialist in accessibility and public architecture, he helped remove architectural barriers for the handicapped across dozens of schools and public facilities, ensuring they could be used and enjoyed by all. His work included civic projects, educational campuses, housing developments, historic restorations, commercial buildings, as well as specialized aviation training facilities nationwide. Some of his notable works for those closest to him would be the work he put into the renovations and additions to his own church, First Baptist Church of El Paso. Many of his projects are also going to be featured at the El Paso Historical Society. Woody’s professional contributions continue to shape the places where people live, work, learn, and gather.
Gathering was a favorite thing of Woody’s. He loved being with his children and grandchildren. He also loved serving in his church in all capacities, as well as attending any and all functions First Baptist hosted. He worked tirelessly with the Disaster Relief program, and taught the boys’ Royal Ambassador’s club at First Baptist for many years. His dedication to nature, people, and God will leave a lasting impression on everyone who knew him. He didn’t always have the words to share his love, but he knew how to show it by kindness and acts of service.
Another passion of Woody’s was his family’s heritage and genealogy. He spent any free time he had researching who his relatives were and everything he could learn about them. To him, one of the most important things for everyone to know about him is where he came from and who in his family he is survived by -
Woodrow is preceded in death by his parents: Woodrow Wilson Hammond and Juanita Wallace, and his siblings: Samuel Hammond and Beth Griswald. He is survived by his wife of 22 years: Peggy Merle Hammond, his children: Stephen Andrew Hammond, Woodrow Hammond III “Sandy”, Cassie Cardenas (Justin), James O’Keeffe, and Julie O’Keeffe, as well as his grandchildren: Taylor Grace Cardenas, Daniel Owen Cardenas, and Joanna Joy Cardenas. He is also survived by many extended friends and family to cherish and honor his memory.
A Visitation will be held from 10:00am to 11:00am on Thursday, April 02, 2026 at First Baptist Church, 805 Montana Ave. with a Celebration of Life to commence at 11:00am. Services are entrusted to Sunset Funeral Homes-West, 480 N. Resler Dr.
