Wynanda “Nan” Nowak, of El Paso, Texas passed away Monday, August 19, 2013 at Providence Memorial Hospital after complications from Alzheimer’s. Born in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, September 1, 1928 to Piet Hes and Anna Bakker Hes, Nan was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a witness to the occupation of Amsterdam during World War II. She, along with family members, helped the Resistance combat the Nazi persecution of Dutch Jews. Her strong spirit of commitment to others continued throughout the rest of her life. While living in Germany, Nan was responsible for overseeing the operation of MWR bowling centers. She was devoted to youth bowling and was the secretary, coach and mentor for numerous children at Bowlero Lanes, TABY leagues. As a board member for the Women’s Bowling Association, she represented El Paso women bowlers. Over the course of forty years, she and her husband , Raymond helped develop Sun City Dairy Queen into a prosperous El Paso business. She believed in giving back to the community and supported sponsorship of various activities to include youth baseball, sponsorship with El Paso schools and the Children’s Miracle Network. She was an avid bowler and gardener. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Raymond Nowak; her daughters, Renee Nowak of El Paso, Texas and Donna Ives of Stafford, Virginia; her granddaughter, Allison Allen of Norfolk, Virginia; her grandson, Kevin Ives of Phoenix, Arizona; her son-in-law, Sean Allen of Norfolk, Virginia and her great-granddaughter, Cora Allen of Norfolk, Virginia. A Scripture Service will be held on Saturday, August 24, 2013 at Sunset Funeral Home Northeast, 4631 Honda Pass, El Paso, Texas at 11:00 AM followed by a celebration of her life.
